Two ranking communist rebels operating in Nueva Vizcaya and Kalinga surrendered to military authorities separately last weekend, reports reaching Armed Forces headquarters said. Lt. Gen. Romeo Dominguez, commanding officer of the AFP Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom), identified the rebels as Jerry “Ka Eugene” Valdez, of Barangay Bonfal in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya; and Mary Jane “Ka Myra” Bagayao, of Barangay Ab-abaan, in Balbalan town, Kalinga. Citing reports, Dominguez said Valdez was designated by the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) as the “political officer for the youth sector” of Sandatahang Yunit Pampropaganda (SYP) of the rebels’ armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA).
