Mark Sageman, a former CIA agent and an expert on terrorism has told Russian news site Newsru.com that, according to his information, Russian Spetsnaz almost killed Bin Laden during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Sageman is currently in Moscow presenting his book Understanding Terrorist Networks. In an interview with Newsru.com Sageman, who worked in Afghanistan during his CIA career, dismissed allegations that Bin Laden was a creation of the CIA. He said that volunteers from Islamic countries never took part in combat operations in Afghanistan even if they were in the country during the war with the Soviet Union. He said he knew all the Afghani field commanders but never heard of Bin Laden during the war.
