Over 2,000 people have sought refuge near UN peacekeepers in northeastern Congo after a week of attacks by ethnic fighters, a UN spokesman said Monday. Some 2,500 villagers are outside a makeshift UN base after fleeing Che, a remote district of sweeping hills and cut-off valleys where daily attacks have killed 18 people and destroyed over 220 homes since Jan. 19, said UN spokesman Mamadou Bah. Dozens of Pakistani peacekeepers arrived by helicopter Saturday to secure the area after humanitarian workers last week saw burning homes and residents fleeing for safety as fighters attacked Che, Bah said.
