Insurgents unleashed a string of attacks across central and northern Iraq today that left about a dozen Iraqis and an American Marine dead, as officials began final preparations to hold the country’s first contested elections in decades. The attacks, which included suicide car bombings in the besieged cities of Samarra and Baquba, appeared to continue a pattern intended to sow fear among Iraqis before national and provincial elections on Sunday.
