Fears of violence grow in Ecuador political disputes
Ecuador’s complex political divisions could descend into violence today as opponents and supporters of President Lucio Gutiérrez hold counter-demonstrations in Guayaquil, the country’s biggest and most economically important city. The mobilisations follow controversial moves last month by Mr Gutiérrez to purge government opponents – including leading members of the centre-right Social Christian party that runs Guayaquil – from the country’s judiciary.
