Federal, state, and local agencies, along with industry groups, are exploring numerous potential plant and animal disease or bioterrorism threats to the farm-food chain, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) food and ag program manager John Hoffman said last week. He spoke at the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) annual meeting in Charlotte, N.C. But while Hoffman assured farmers “I’m here to help you,” he emphasized they must be part of the security vigilance. Both “input security” — safeguarding chemicals and fertilizers — and “infrastructure security” — protection of commodities beyond the farmgate — “are going to have to become part of your business plan on the farm,” AFBF’s Rebeckah Freeman stressed.
