Indian Kashmir’s top Islamic cleric said in a sermon marking the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha that granting autonomy to the revolt-racked state would not end the dispute there. The Indian government said earlier this week it would appoint a committee to examine the issue of granting greater autonomy to Muslim-majority Kashmir, the scene of a bloody 15-year insurgency against New Delhi’s rule. “We want to make it clear that granting autonomy is not the solution,” Mirwaiz Umar Farooq told thousands of worshippers who jammed Srinagar’s Jamia mosque, the Himalayan state’s biggest place of worship.
