There have been minor incidents around Story County involving hazardous materials spilled from trains, but it’s been decades since there was a serious accident. Twice as many trains travel through Nevada, Iowa, as did 20 years ago. The Iowa Department of Transportation inspects the tracks, and the federal government monitors what’s being hauled in the rail cars. Local emergency responders said they are prepared to handle trouble on the tracks. Lori Morrissey, of Story County’s emergency management agency, said the agency worries most about hazardous materials that are in gas form.
