Uganda and the African Union (AU) on Friday agreed on a possible role for the latter in resolution of the northern Ugandan conflict but only if the ongoing Betty Bigombe mission fails. The position was reached during discussion between President Yoweri Museveni and visiting AU Deputy Chairperson Patrick Mazimhaka at the president’s home at Rwakitura, Mbarara district in southern Uganda, according to a press release issued here by the Ugandan State House. Mazimhaka accepted Museveni’s recommendation that former minister of state Betty Bigombe’s mission would continue their mediation up to mid February 2005 to see whether they will get theleaders of the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) to end terrorismand to come out of the bush.
