UN Security Council has granted Denmark chairmanship for its counter-terrorism committee. Russian resistance was quelled with a diplomatic compromise. United Nations´ Security Council agreed unanimously on Wednesday that Denmark would lead its counter-terrorism committee (CTC). The committee is expected to assume a leading role in international efforts to quench terrorism. The decision was made in a closed meeting, where Security Council member states distributed chairman seats in 14 committees and work groups. Denmark will also head a committee supervising sanctions against Liberia, daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported. Danish ambitions to lead anti-terror efforts were almost thwarted last year, when Russia´s government indicated that they opposed the idea. But Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller and Russian colleague Sergej Lavrov came to a diplomatic compromise, allowing Denmark to take over the chairman seat. According to the agreement, Russia will lead CTC for the next three months and head a conference in Kazakhstan later this month. Full Story
