Colombia’s second-largest rebel group on Friday backed off its commitment to eliminate mines in north-central Antioquia province, saying it wants the government to guarantee its members’ security. A member of the National Liberation Army (ELN) command structure calling himself Antonio Garcia gave an e-mail interview to Teleantioquia in which he discussed the group’s offer last month to eliminate some of the mines in the region as a “unilateral gesture” of peace. “Demining a zone without an agreement with the government has very big risks, since the armed forces can try to gain a military advantage by thinking they have routes cleared for their…incursions,” Garcia said.
