Forty-six rebels have been killed outside the capital Bujumbura in a sweep by the army and a former rebel group now aligned with the transitional government, the army said late on Sunday. The soldiers from the Forces for National Liberation (FNL), the only ethnic Hutu rebel group still fighting in the tiny central African state, were killed on Saturday during a retaliatory attack on one of their bases. “The army together with the FDD organised a whole day of operations chasing the FNL,” army spokesman Adolphe Manirakiza said, adding 30 guns were seized. Three soldiers from the army died and three were wounded in Saturday’s fighting, which was in response to a Friday attack by the FNL, he said. Full Story
