The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta said on Wednesday that its consulate in the East Java provincial capital of Surabaya would be closed for the rest of the year due to security concerns and staff shortages. On Saturday, the U.S. State Department warned that Islamic terrorists were planning more attacks against Western targets in Indonesia over Christmas and New Year. It reiterated advice to its citizens not to travel to the country. The embassy sent an e-mail to American citizens in Indonesia advising that the consulate in Surabaya, the country’s second largest city, would be closed until after New Year’s.
