The city that gave birth to the “Orange Revolution” erupted in victory cries Sunday as late results showed opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko with an apparently insurmountable lead in Ukraine’s presidential election. Three exit polls gave him a 15 to 20 percentage point lead over pro-Russian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych. The official vote count gave the Western-leaning Yushchenko a 52.3% to 43.9% lead with ballots from 98.5% of precincts counted in Sunday’s voting. “There is news: It’s over. Now, today, the Ukrainian people have won. I congratulate you,” Yushchenko told a festive crowd in Kiev’s central Independence Square, the center of weeks of protests after the fraudulent and now-annulled Nov. 21 ballot in which his Russian-backed opponent had been declared the winner.
