Yala’s largest religious school, which Thai authorities have branded a training and recruitment ground for militant Muslims, has a long history of Islamic teaching with almost 200 religious instructors from various countries in the Middle East. Established in 1951 by Muhamad Tohe Sulong, the elite Thamawitaya Mulniti School is located right in the centre of Yala on Siroros Road. It provides both a secular and an Islamic curriculum for over 6,000 students in this violence-plagued province on the Malaysian border. However, while most students study both, some 400 study only Islamic subjects. Authorities have been keeping a close eye on the school, which is fully funded by the Education Ministry, especially since the April 28 bloodshed, when one of its students was killed at the historic Krue Se mosque together with some 30 other separatists who had taken refuge there.
