Israeli troops raided southern Gaza today in response to mortar attacks by militants, killing at least three Palestinians, the Israeli Army radio quoted Palestinian officials as saying. Other reports put the death toll at five, with Reuters quoting Palestinian medics and witnesses as saying that 22 people were wounded and that homes were demolished in the raid on the town of Khan Yunis. Four of the dead were militants and the other a civilian, the agency said. Elsewhere in Gaza, Israeli and Palestinian rescue forces were cooperating in a search for three Palestinians declared missing after a weapons-smuggling tunnel collapsed overnight along the Gaza-Egypt border overnight, Israel Radio reported. The radio was quoted by the Israeli daily Haaretz as saying that five Palestinians died in the collapse, but Reuters quoted witnesses as saying that five people were trapped inside and that the fate of people inside was unknown.
