The political leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas has said that it has had secret contacts with the United States and the European Union. In an interview with the BBC’s Newsnight programme, Khaled Meshal said the “EU continues to have contacts and communications with us”. He also claimed that Washington had had contact with his organisation in recent months. Both Washington and the EU class Hamas as a proscribed terrorist organisation. This requires, in the case of Washington, that US agencies try to block the finances and fundraising activities of the organisation and isolate its leaders. Full Story
