Government troops cannot flush out suspected militants and terrorists in Mindanao because of peace talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a military commander said on December 9. The field commander, who asked for anonymity, said more than 200 terrorists belonging to the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah are roaming Mindanao, particularly the mountains of the Lanao provinces and the hinterlands of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat, where the MILF has camps. “The problem is this, these JI members are seeking refuge in MILF camps and in areas considered to be densely populated but also an MILF territory,” he said.
