A former chief of Pakistan’s Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt. General(retired) Asad Durrani has said that terror mastermind Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda network is as powerful as the US. The fact that the Al Qaeda could mastermind something like the September 11, WTC twin tower attacks right under the US’s nose, laid credence to the fact that it is as ‘big a power’ as the United States, and therefore, could carry on its fight against the US for a very long time to come, the Daily Times quoted Dyurrani as saying. He also said that there was no truth to the claim that Pakistan’s crackdown on terrorist elements in the mountainous region bordering Afghanistan had either withered down the Al Qaeda terrorist network or disrupted its organizational structure. “How could it organize big operations like the Madrid bombing, if the organization was lacking coordination?” Durrani asked.
