Former Chilean political prisoners on Monday released an alternative to the recently published official report on torture during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, naming close to 2,000 people involved in applying torture or concealing the crime. The Coordinator of Former Political Prisoners also demanded that the government of President Ricardo Lagos publish the names of torturers included in the official report and hand the list over to justice officials. The government has classified that part of the report drafted by the “Valech Commission,” which established that 27,255 people were tortured during the 1973-1990 Pinochet dictatorship and that torturing prisoners was official policy.
