Palestinian elections crucial: Erakat
Holding Palestinian leadership elections is crucial, negotiations minister Saeb Erakat said, one day after gunmen opened fire in the presence of PLO chief Mahmud Abbas, killing two policemen. “If we don’t have elections, violence and anarchy will begin again… If we are able to hold elections in 60 days, we can begin a process to restore law and public order,” Erakat told Israel’s private Channel 2 television. “We have to be worried. I believe what happened yesterday is shameful,” he added, of Sunday’s shooting in a Gaza City funeral tent to honour late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Full Story
