US commanders say they are negotiating the surrender of as many as 300 people holed up in a mosque in the Iraqi rebel stronghold of Falluja. It is unclear whether those inside are insurgents or civilians. In the fifth day of the American-led assault on the city, troops have encountered fierce but sporadic resistance from the insurgents.
