Colombia’s notorious rightist militias, currently holding peace talks with the government, proposed Wednesday that the nation’s armed forces absorb at least some of their members. United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) top leaders Salvatore Mancuso and Ernesto Baez made the suggestion in a communique. According to the AUC’s plan, demobilized members who join the armed forces would only carry out tasks such as guarding civilian and infrastructure projects and not combat activities, and would report to the Interior and Justice Ministries, not Defense.
