Rio 'drug lord' dies in gunfight

Police in Rio de Janeiro have shot dead one of the city’s most notorious suspected drug barons. Irapuan David Lopes, known to most as Gangan, died in a shoot-out with troops who had been sent to arrest him in the Sao Carlos shanty town. The state governor Rosinha Matheus was reported to have ordered his arrest. Gangan was thought to control drug sales in 10 Rio shanty towns and was behind recent outbreaks of gang warfare in the city, police said. Full Story
