Al Qaeda Probably to Blame for Taba Bombings
Vice President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday that al Qaeda was probably responsible for the deadly bombings of Egyptian Red Sea resorts but aides said his assertion was largely based on Israeli news reports. Cheney, at a campaign stop in Davenport, Iowa, said last week’s attack on the Taba Hilton on Egypt’s border with Israel “looks like it probably was an al Qaeda attack,” though he added, “We don’t know for sure yet.” Cheney offered no evidence to back up his assertion of al Qaeda involvement, and other administration officials pointed to conflicting reports about whom might be to blame.
