U.S. granted asylum to wife of Colombian militia chief Castaño
The United States has extended asylum to the wife of missing Colombian paramilitary leader Carlos Castaño, according to Washington’s ambassador here. “Several months ago Mrs. Castaño, terrorized by the disappearance of her husband, asked the United States for asylum,” Ambassador William Wood said in an interview with the magazine Semana published on Monday. The co-founder and erstwhile leader of the rightist United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, or AUC, has been missing since an apparent attempt on his life in April. “After consulting with the Colombian government, we granted her (request) for humanitarian reasons,” Wood added.
