A member of a government task force working to stop illegal diamond mining on Indian reservations in the Amazon was shot dead at an ATM, authorities said. An unknown teenager fired two shots at Apoena Meireles as he was leaving the cash machine in Cacoal, a town in the western Amazon close to the Roosevelt Indian reservation, on Saturday night, Federal Indian Bureau spokesman Carlos Tavares said. Meireles, a specialist on the Cinta Larga tribe and former head of the federal bureau, died on the way to the hospital. The gunman escaped. Full Story
