U.S. evidence a blow to detainees
Over the strong objections of defense attorneys, immigration Judge Neale Foster has admitted into evidence the Venezuelan government’s request to extradite two former Venezuelan military officers accused of bombing two diplomatic missions in Caracas last year. Admission of the document is a setback for the two men because it contains evidence that they may have committed the crimes, buttressing the U.S. government’s argument that they don’t deserve asylum. ”Yes, I’m admitting it into evidence,” Foster said as defense attorney Kenneth Panzer angrily protested, arguing that the request had not been properly authenticated by American officials, was inadequately translated and was incomplete.
