The United States is stepping up a preelection crackdown on visa violators suspected of posing a terrorism risk, an immigration spokesman said on Monday, but he denied the sweep singled out any ethnic or religious groups. He said Immigration and Customs Enforcement was increasing a focus on visa violators begun after Attorney General John Ashcroft announced in May that the United States had credible information al Qaeda was planning an attack within months. “May 2004 was clearly a benchmark for further intensification,” ICE spokesman Dean Boyd said. “As we move forward, the window before the election is narrowing, so we continue to intensify our efforts.” Full Story
