The American military and Iraqi soldiers continued Saturday to try to secure the heart of Samarra, a city rife with insurgents that may be the first battleground in a concerted effort to retake rebel territory. As American soldiers formed perimeters in the downtown area with armored vehicles, turning the neighborhood into an armed camp, the Iraqi interior minister, Falah al-Naqib, a native of Samarra, held a news conference in the mayor’s office with American commanders watching closely. “We just came out of a defensive position into an offensive position,” Mr. Naqib said. “What is happening is a message to the rest of Iraq.”Full Story
