Militant Offered to Halt Terror Attacks

A militant from Egypt offered to halt attacks like the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in exchange for the release of a fundamentalist Muslim cleric from an American prison, according to evidence presented in a federal trial. The evidence came from transcripts of wiretapped phone conversations provided by prosecutors in the trial of attorney Lynne Stewart, who is accused of aiding terrorism, The New York Times reported in Wednesday editions. The cleric whom the militant wanted to free was Stewart’s client, Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who was convicted in 1995 and is serving a life sentence for plotting bomb attacks in New York. Full Story
