Jose Carlos dos Reis Encina, once Brazil’s most notorious drug lord often compared to a modern-day Robin Hood, was shot and killed Thursday in downtown Rio. The 59-year-old Encina, known universally as Escadinha, or “Stepladder,” was gunned down in his car by two men on motorcycles with automatic weapons, police said.
