An Algerian held without being charged since 2001 under British anti-terror laws brought in after the September 11 attacks was finally freed, his lawyer told reporters. Home Secretary David Blunkett said the “certificate” allowing the man, identified only as “D”, would be discontinued because there was insufficient evidence against him. “D” was among a group of people detained in Britain in December 2001 under the anti-terror laws passed within weeks of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
