William J. Burns, the US envoy to the Middle East, sought agreement with Syrian officials at the weekend for military co-operation to stem cross border infiltration of anti-US fighters into Iraq. “We discussed among other things practical ways in which our military experts might co-operate with Syrian and Iraq counterparts on [the problem of cross border infiltration by anti-US fighters],” said Mr Burns, deputy secretary of state for near eastern affairs, during the first high level US visit to Damascus in more than a year.Full Story
