A Colombian labor federation said Tuesday that death squads linked to rightist militias plan to kill dozens of union activists in the coming months. The CUT union coalition said 70 labor activists in the northern city of Barranquilla are on the hit list. Jesus Tovar, the CUT chief in Barranquilla, said seven people had already been killed in the city and that similar attacks were planned in Medellin, Cali and Bucaramanga. Colombian Vice President Francisco Santos has been informed of the situation, Tovar said, adding that the suspected plotters have designated the CUT organization in Barranquilla as a “military objective.” Three former CUT regional chiefs – Alfredo Castro, Miguel Espinosa Rangel and Adolfo Munera – were recently killed in the city.
