Landless Guatemalan peasants who had occupied a private ranch on the southern coast fought a pitched battle with police Tuesday that left three officers and four farmers dead, a campesino organization said. Carlos Arriaga, leader of the National Coordinator of Peasant Organizations (CNOC), told EFE that another 15 to 20 peasants were wounded in the clashes. Authorities have neither confirmed nor denied reports of the seven deaths, but volunteer firefighters reported that at least 40 people, including police, peasants and journalists, were wounded.
