The authorities are looking into a purported link, having to do with the sale of arms, between Middle Eastern terrorists and murdered drug kingpin Pedro Garcia and his henchmen in Honduras and Colombia. At a news conference Security Minister Oscar Alvarez said: “We have information (…) regarding telephone calls to people associated with Pedro Garcia Montes and from Montes to Afghanistan, Italy, Peru, Colombia, the United States, Panama, and other places around the world.” He added: “We are checking with intelligence sources in other countries to find out what was the reason for these conversations” with people in those countries: “remember that one of those calls was to the Middle East and that is why we are talking about a possible link to terrorist cells.” Yesterday Alvarez and Prosecutor for Organized Crime Affairs Doris Aguilar held a news conference to present the evidence of these ties as well as documents that show a link between Garcia Montes and Colombian citizen Ethalson Mejia Hoy and his wife Gloria Maritza Garcia in the drugs and arms trade. Alvarez said that a cache of some 80 heavy weapons discovered Friday night in a house located in El Zamorano, 20 km east of Tegucigalpa, might have been earmarked for Middle Eastern terrorist groups.
