The mayor of a Brazilian Amazon town jailed on corruption charges not only continues to exercise his authority from his cell but is also campaigning for re-election, the local press reported Friday. Mayor Romero Mendonza of the municipality of Presidente Figueiredo was arrested on Aug. 10 along with 19 others in Amazonas state on charges of embezzling a total of approximately $170 million. The mayor is behind bars at the federal police station in Manaus, the state capital, and every day his aides drive 104 kilometers (65 miles) to bring him the documents he needs to sign and conduct the city’s business, according to the daily O Estado de Sao Paulo.
