Peasants who have fled their villages in remote northwestern Colombia say recent combat between leftist rebels and rightist militiamen has left some 200 fighters dead. Ventura Diaz, government peace adviser in the jungle province of Choco, which borders Panama, reported Wednesday that the refugees say the fighting has escalated in the past two months. The region is contested between leftist guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and right-wing militiamen of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, known as the AUC.
