The U.S. military said Monday it was ready to help the Afghan government quell factional infighting in western Afghanistan, where 21 people died in clashes at the weekend. A day earlier the Defense Ministry said it was sending two battalions to Herat province, where the forces of Governor Ismail Khan are under attack from rival militia leaders. “The coalition does remain very concerned about the security in western Afghanistan,” Major Scott Nelson, a spokesman for the U.S. military, told a press briefing.
