China has been practicing an attack on Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, aimed at killing or capturing the island’s leaders in a “decapitation” action, Taiwan Premier Yu Shyi-kun said Sunday. The strategy appeared to have been inspired by the U.S. action in Iraq to capture Saddam Hussein, said a senior military official. Tensions have been running high in the Taiwan Strait as China prepares for a possible military showdown, convinced Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian will push for formal statehood during his second term, which began in May.
