Eurocorps assumed command of 7,000 NATO-led international peacekeepers in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul in the 12-year-old force’s first deployment outside Europe. The European force will face a tough challenge with security deteriorating ahead of October 9 presidential elections in a wave of attacks on civilians and government officials as well as troops. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which has 7,000 troops from 30 countries, was set up by the United Nations in December 2001, weeks after the defeat of the radical Islamic Taliban regime.
