Egypt is to start training 45 Palestinian police officers here next month, as part of preparations for Israel’s planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, a government daily said. Al-Ahram said the Palestinian Authorities had been invited to submit a 45-man list for the programme. Cairo and the Jewish state, meanwhile, have struck an “agreement in principle” for Egyptian border guards rather than police to monitor the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, it said. “This measure will not modify the (1979) peace treaty” between the two states that demilitarised the Sinai and laid down strict terms for carrying weapons in the peninsula, said Al-Ahram.
