Abducted Iranian consul 'alive'

An Iranian diplomat kidnapped in Iraq is “alive and well”, the foreign ministry in Tehran says.

Officials are working to secure the release of Fereidoun Jahani who was seized on Wednesday. Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said Tehran was aware of the abduction immediately, though militants only claimed the capture on Sunday. Mr Jahani was seized on his way to the Shia Muslim holy city of Karbala where he was to start work as Iran’s consul. Mr Kharrazi told reporters in Tehran that a committee has been set up within the foreign ministry to monitor developments and try to secure the release of Mr Jahani. Full Story
