An al Qaeda plot to attack financial targets in the United States could still be in the works, U.S. television networks reported on Wednesday, while the White House said it had new and alarming evidence that justified raising the nation’s terror alert level. Federal agents were checking evidence indicating that a captured al Qaeda figure had made telephone contact with people in the United States within the past few months, the networks said, citing U.S. officials.
