U.S. authorities have launched a broad search for terrorist operatives who might have helped conduct surveillance of the five financial institutions in New York City, Newark, N.J., and Washington, D.C., that were the focus of Sunday’s terrorism alert, two federal law enforcement officials said Monday. The search reflects a sobering conclusion that U.S. investigators reached after reviewing detailed reconnaissance reports seized last month from an al-Qaeda operative in Pakistan: It’s unclear whether the operatives who did the surveillance of the U.S. financial institutions are still in this country preparing for attacks. The officials, who are familiar with U.S. counterterrorism efforts, said the search will be a huge undertaking for investigators.
