At least four people have been held in raids in central Italy on suspicion of having carried out a series of parcel bomb attacks. A number of houses were searched in pre-dawn raids in Rome, Naples and Viterbo near Lazio, police said. They described the men as “anarchists” held on suspicion of “subversive association resulting in terrorism”. Anarchists are said to have sent a series of bombs through the mail to leading Italians late last year. One of the packages was addressed to the head of the European Commission, Romano Prodi.
