Dispute Prompts Afghan Leader to Delay Trip

President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan postponed a state visit to Pakistan at the last minute on Sunday amid political tension at home with his defense minister and potential vice-presidential running mate, Marshal Muhammad Qasim Fahim. Monday is the deadline for Mr. Karzai to register his candidacy for the presidential election on Oct. 9 and to pick his running mates for the two posts of vice president. Marshal Fahim is expected to be one of the nominees, but this would require him to resign immediately from his positions of vice president and defense minister, something he has reportedly resisted.
