President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan postponed a state visit to Pakistan at the last minute on Sunday amid political tension at home with his defense minister and potential vice-presidential running mate, Marshal Muhammad Qasim Fahim. Monday is the deadline for Mr. Karzai to register his candidacy for the presidential election on Oct. 9 and to pick his running mates for the two posts of vice president. Marshal Fahim is expected to be one of the nominees, but this would require him to resign immediately from his positions of vice president and defense minister, something he has reportedly resisted. The issue has raised tensions in Kabul, the Afghan capital, over the last two days as Marshal Fahim did not attend the usual Saturday morning conference with Mr. Karzai and his cabinet members, and instead sat ensconced with his chief of staff for a long meeting.Full Story
