Philippines Says It Remains U.S. Ally

The Philippines sought to mend a rift with the United States on Wednesday after it pulled troops out of Iraq to win freedom for a Filipino hostage, with a presidential spokesman saying Manila still looked to Washington as “our big brother.” The government also issued thanks to countries that helped win the release of Angelo dela Cruz, whom militants threatened to kill had the Philippines not removed its small troop contingent. Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the Philippines will remain a strong U.S. ally. “We still consider the United States as our big brother in the security arena,” he said. “Our long-standing and maturing relationship with the United States will survive this hostage crisis.
