U.S. troops will step up patrols with Afghan forces and U.N. security staff under a new operation to protect the country’s post-Taliban elections, the military said. Combat operations will be carried out only “when necessary” to shield presidential elections set for October 9 and a parliamentary vote next spring, a statement said late Wednesday. Lt. Gen.
